There has never been a better time in history for women.
We are more powerful than we have ever been and the statistics tell us just how much so:
Did you know that 89% of all bank accounts belong to women?
91% of all new homes are purchases made by women;
85% of all consumer purchases are made by women;
92% of all vacations are purchased by women.
Women spend about $5 trillion annually and have influenced $90 billion worth of consumer electronic purchases.
We make major decisions in our homes. We make major decisions in our lives. We make major decisions in our businesses.
And we will account for more than half of the 99.27 million small business jobs created by 2018.
Over the next decade we’re going to control two-thirds of the consumer wealth in the United States. We will be the beneficiaries of the largest transference of wealth in our country’s history. Estimates range from $12 to $40 trillion.
The women who come before us broke glass ceilings that we never imagined could be broken. They were pioneers in fields of study and interests that we never imagined that they could and would be. We gained rights that we never imagined would be possible. And yet, in the traditional history curricula that we were raised with and that our children are being raised with still do not represent the struggles, achievements and accomplishments of these incredible, brilliant, pioneering, bold and audacious women.
March is Women’s History Month. It’s an extraordinary opportunity to look to our past, understand those who came before us and take the messages, wisdom and power of possibility they had to share and begin to translate it not only into our own lives, but to the lives of our children and next generation.
Here is a little video that I put together, encouraging you to explore what Women’s History Month is all about.

I am passionate about supporting you and all women to become who you are meant to be, whatever that looks like. Perhaps today you are a stay at home mom. Perhaps you’re a single working mom. Perhaps you are rising in the ranks of your company and have assumed the responsibility of senior executive, CFO or CEO.
However you define yourself, the thread that binds us all together is that of being a woman. Where we once talked about the feminist movement, driven by the fight for equality, the push for our rights, the assertive and sometimes aggressive manner with which we had to advocate on our own behalf, is now settling in to a new dawn of women’s right; the creation of a new economy, an economy that is driven by our power…in the home and out.
It is driven by our ability, our capacity, and our commitment to do what we want, and we now have a clear pathway thanks to the women who have come before us who pushed through fear and adversity to be, do and create what they were passionate about.
However, we have to be careful. We have to make sure to remember that are not the same as men. This is a new feminism.
I understand the fight for equality, but we are not “equal”, we are different…we are women. We are wives, partners, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, and best friends, in addition to the powerful roles that we hold in our businesses and in driving creative, corporate and non-profit work around the world. As we create this new economy, as we take the incredible wealth and opportunity that’s available to us, we have to honor this power and use it carefully as the leaders that our families, our children and the world need us to be.
It is not enough to simply fight for our rights. It is not enough to simply settle into our role as a mother. It is not enough to simply climb the corporate ladder. But rather, we must hold all of these roles near to us, so that we can live our lives around the way that we want to feel and be the kind of role modesl that the next generation desperately need.
Take time this month, Women’s History Month, to explore what it took for the women who came before to break the barriers that give us permission to choose the way that we want to live our lives. Take those lessons, embrace them and integrate them into your own life. Explore the infinite possibilities of what you can become, and step fiercely and femininely into those roles. We have incredible power, let’s use it wisely together.
